Denkert Signature Model Baseball Gloves - Ultimate Resource

Denkert Sporting Goods Company made signature model baseball gloves from the 1920's thru the 1960's out of Johnstown and Gloversville, NY. I have compiled a listing of over 533 player-endorsed glove models manufactured by Denkert. Their Pro Master, Pro Maker and Sure Trap models were also made for private brands

It would only make sense that being located in New York, Denkert would have a Mickey Mantle endorsement. In fact, 24 different Mantle models have been discovered, including exclusive store models.

Denkert did not get a lot of endorsements from other major stars, but, seemed to sign contracts with minor stars such as Pee Wee Reese, Al Rosen, Phil Rizzuto, Bill Skowron (18 known models), Bobby Richardson and Red Schoendienst. Reese was a favorite, having no less than 25 different model numbers over the years. They also got endorsements from more common players than most other glove makers such as Vic Wertz, Danny O'Connell, Del Rice, Jim Landis, Chet Laabs, Frank Malzone, Casey Wise and Bill Virdon.

Being located in New York, there were many endorsed gloves for New York Yankees, New York Giants and Brooklyn  Dodgers players.

The most common glove seems to be the G54 Henry "Hank" Thompson model, which is worth around $10-15, but, in excellent condition has been bringing up to $50. Unless....you have it unopened in it's original box. Then you are talking hundreds.

Denkert gloves were offered as a redeemable item through S and H Stamps in the 1950's. My theory is that highly common gloves such as the G51 Chet Laabs, G52 Casey Wise, G53 Frank Malzone and G54 Hank Thompson were offered as the S and H stamp gloves.  The most common catcher's mitt endorsement is that of Del Crandall, who has 10 known models. Denkert Gloves, on average, are not worth as much as some of the other manufacturers who obtained big star endorsements and perhaps made a little bit of a better product.

1953 S&H stamps catalog. The 9-321 1/2 Chet Laabs glove can clearly be seen in the bottom.

                                                                         G52 Casey Wise

From the Buckle Back gloves of Red Worthington, Earl Averill, Ted Lyons and Freddie MaGuire from the early 1930's to the 1960's models of Dean Chance, Frank Howard and Charlie Neal, Denkert gloves are interesting and fun to collect. Near the end of their run, Denkert had gloves made in Japan.

New model number discoveries are still being made, but, for the glove collector, getting just about every endorsed Denkert glove could be a possible achievement.

If you have a question or comment regarding the signature model Denkert Gloves, I would love to hear from you.

I HAVE A DENKERT GLOVE THAT HAS US STAMPED IN IT, AM I CORRECT IN ASSUMING IT WAS A GOVERMENT GLOVE

Denkert made gloves during WWII and possibly during the Korean War era that were stamped US for the services.

I came across a Denkert ST7 glove with a Vic ?? (not Wertz)Paura maybe, on it. It also says Pro Maker / Trapper Model
any info on this one?
ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
The Denkert ST7 First Baseman Glove was endorsed by Bill Skowron, Gil Hodges and Rudy York. If you have an ST7 with the name Vic and it is not Wertz, than it is likely Vic Power. Power is most commonly found on the ST8 model.
Anonymous said…
Thanks so much. It is Vic Power's name on it and an ST7 model. I'll try and find out what years Vic played and maybe it'll help me figure out what year it might have been made. --- it was discovered in an old trophy case where my son plays ball, and I told the president of the league I would try to find out some info about it. I appreciate your help.

I recentantly purchased a denkert "pro maker" model number 814480 at a flea market. I was wondering if you have any information or even and estimated value on this glove. It is bright red and that is what caught my attention. Additionally, there is no player endorsement. Thanks for any information on this glove

My grandfather, Jim Denkert, owned Denkert Sporting Goods. I'm looking for one of his gloves, in outstanding condition, preferably still in it's original box. I'm also looking for a football & basketball in good shape with the Denkert logo. If you come across one or can help point me in the right direction, please contact me at homeshoppers@me.com. I've searched high and low plus database of first basemen. Can you help me identify the player or the phrase in question. Thanks,

I have (3) Different version Denkert G84 Pro Maker fielders glovers. All of them say Mickey Mantle. The earlier version has NO formed leather pocket or lacing. The other (2) have formed leather pockets with lacing. But one says Patent applied for and the other says patent issued in 1956. When did Denkert start making the G84 models for Mickey Mantle ??
ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
Your description of the 3 different versions of the same model number glove I think answers the question. This proves that the G84 model was used for years. There is no way to know what exact year unless there is a mention in a trade catalog or Denkert catalog. I am unaware of Denkert placing endorsement ads in periodicals in that time period. With 3 different versions of this glove, they date between the 1956-1962 era.

I have enjoyed reading your blog about Denkert gloves. It brings back fond memories. My father was a foreman for them and thought Fondly of Jim Denkert. I myself would occasional work there after school to turn footballs in the late 60's. Denkerts just didn't make gloves.Other sporting equipment included boxing gloves, footballs and basketballs. I also know that Gil Hodges had an endorsement. I used to play firstbase with his glove. I was also a catcher and was able to fool around with designs and designed my own model.
I will keep checking this site for futher updates. Larry Melita

Larry,

Ah yes...Gil Hodges was one of their favorites...he is found on no less than 5 first baseman models.

My Mother used S&H Green Stamps to purchase my first baseball glove, a Denkert model G54, in about 1959. It was signed by Henry "Hank" Thompson, the New York Giants 3rd baseman. Sadly, after his career, he served time in prison and died at the young age of 43 in 1969. I still have the glove.

I stumbled onto your site and found it extremely interesting since I have a collection of old baseball gloves and catcher's gear. I recently found a Red Schoendienst Pro Maker model SE600. The brand is a private label for the old Jim Flynn's Sports in Dayton, Ohio. They closed many years ago. Could this be a Denkert made glove. It in really good shape with wear in the inside palm area. Fingers are laced. I'm guessing early 50s. Any ideas? Thank you.
ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
"Pro Maker" was a Denkert Trademark, so, yes. I have yet a record of a glove made for Flynn's. Schoendienst was used on a private label "Olympic" F550
Anonymous said…
Hello, I too have stumbled upon your site while searching the web for glove information. I have two gloves that belonged to my father, with which he played mainly during the 50's. One is a Nakona Ken Staples signature catchers' mitt. The other is a Denkert split finger,(4 finger/thumb) 2-strap web, button wrist strap fielders' glove. I can not clearly make out the entire model number - I can clearly see it ends with 500, but can not tell the letter or letters that precede it. Possibly SE or F, not sure. Guessing it is fro late 40's to early 50's as well.

ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
The Al Rosen glove is NOT on my list. It was made in the 1950's. I do not have any gloves sold through Crutchfield's on my list, so, it's a scarce one. That does not make it particularly valuable though.

I have a denkert bill skowron model number BM40. Any information of when this was made- rarity etc???
ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
Bill Skowron has no less than 13 different model First Baseman Gloves made by Denkert. The BM40 was likely made around the 1950's-early 1960's. The BM40 is not nearly as common as some of his ST model gloves, but, that does not really made a difference in value. $25 or so in EX++ condition.

ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
The M25 is not an endorsed glove, so, I do not keep a tab on them. The original box helps immensely. I would think this would be an earlier glove. If it has a buckle back, then, it is really nice and I would guess between $125-200. If it's not a buck back, $75-125. Just an educated guess.

Would you have any info on this glove? The only one I found on eBay claims its from the 1930's, but I know Worthington played in the 50's/60's.
ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
Red Worthington played from 1931-1934. AL Worthington is a different player. I believe that is a buckleback glove and is worth around $50

Wanting to know if the G46 glove I have, Pro Maker, and wine colored leather is a childs glove that was sold in the 1939 ad for 89 cents. No endorsement and a button back. (the design of the button has 5 stars with leaf stems.)

The glove "could" be an M28, do you know what year it might be?

My dad gave my son an old glove that was given to him. It's a Denkert G84 Red schoendienst. We're trying to find out more about it. Any ideas?
ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
THE G84 Red Schoendienst is a common glove from the 1950's. Value is around $10-20 in EX condition.

I have a Denkert Model G84 RH Ed “Whitey” Ford fielder’s glove in red leather. It is a Pro Master made in the U.S.A. Patented 6-19-1956. Patent No. 2,750,594. The glove fits on right hand. (Made for a left-handed thrower). My father bought it for me when I was 5 weeks old. As it turned out, I am left-handed! Used the glove from age 5 to around age 11. Never parted with it! I was so excited to find this site and possibly find out any information about my first glove. I read every post and found no mention of the Whitey Ford Model. I’ll send you pictures if you’d like. Thanks, Jack

Jack,

The G84 Whitey Ford is a fairly common glove made in the 1950's. It's value, can range from $15-50 depending on condition. Unused, mint in box would of course be worth more.

I have a left handed Monte Pearson Horsehide glove. From Coast to Coast Model SG361 Any info. would be appreciated.
ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
Hello,

Your glove is actually not in my log. It would be the 9th glove made for Coast to Coast that I am aware of. The Billy Johnson Coast to Coast SG360 glove can be found in advertising in 1952. Even though Pearson's career ended in 1941, his endorsed gloves continued to be found into the 1950's. Pearson gloves arent worth a whole lot....typically up to $50. Condition is always a factor. High condition gloves can bring a premium

Thank you very much for your information. Sure appreciate it. I didn't know if being a left-handed glove made a difference or not.

thought I'd try to add a pic or two of my Coast to Coast SG361 glove. Hope this works.

Have a denkert pee wee reese m4 model glove. Any info onto his glove?
ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
The M5, I believe, is an earlier Pee Wee Reese Model Glove, so, 1940's era. In Ex Condition it's likely worth under $50

Thank you. Really like these older gloves. Affordable and just plain cool.

Do you have any information on Model ST5? I believe it might be a Babe Dahlgren youth first baseman's mitt from the '50's. (a variation of the design from the Babe Dahlgren mitt from the '40's). It may be an S&H green stamps glove?

Great site...just read all entries back to 2011. Thank you.
ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
The only ST5 First Baseman's glove on my list is the Dick Williams endorsed one.
Anonymous said…
On closer examination of the online photo, the glove appears to be an ST3 not ST5. It appears to be the Babe Dahlgren model I used as my first glove in the 1950's. Though it is in very poor condition, I am considering buying the glove. Do you have any information on it?

Hi, We have a Monte Pearson Monarch glove that says G46X on it. The strap on the back has a button. Do you have any idea when this is from?

Thanks!

The Monte Irvin should be 1950's

I have a Worthington S24 Rudy York endorsed first basemen's glove. I am going to guess this is 1950s too? It has the unique webbing. Very little info about the S24 model. See photos:

I have a Denkert Pro Maker 1329K (no endorsements). What year(s) would this be from? Thanks.
ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
I deal with endorsed gloves. There are endorsed gloves that are in a 1_ _ _ K format that are from the 1940's1950's
ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
The Rudy York is around the late 1940's, maybe early 1950's. The S24 is a Worthington? Gil Hodges is also on an S24.

I have a Heinie Manush F85 glove from the 1930s that belonged to my father. It has two strips of "webbing" between the thumb and forefinger (don't know if that matters; I don't know much about baseball). It also says Greased Palm across the palm and Horsehide along with the Denkert name, the model # and Manush's name and signature. Can you give me more information about it and what it might be worth now? Last I saw in going through your blog was in 2014. It's in excellent condition for its age. Thanks.

Hello I found a denkert m223 Al Walker glove with made in the USA on it and hinge pad stamped on it any ideas on the year and value of it?
ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
I believe that is a 1950's era mitt that is fairly common. Likely anywhere up to $35, unless it is prestine.

I found in a box a Ted Lyon Denkert G57 (looks like a G) baseball glove. Has leather "strings" for a web.
What can you tell me about the glove.

I have a Rudy York model BM19 RH. What year was this glove introduced? Which MLB player would have used this glove besides Rudy York?

thanks !!!
ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
There are no known records for exactly when a particular model number was released. The Rudy York BM19 is fairly common and I think is a 1940's era glove. Although Denkert did make some gloves that Major Leaguers used, they were more known for their store models.
ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
I know of a Ted Lyons G67 glove which is a split finger from the late 1930's or so.

I have a Charlie Keller Junior Denkert J42 Baseball Split Finger Glove Mit 1940's and can't find any pricing for it. the writing is faded and it doesn't have any splits or tears.
ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
A Keller Junior with faded lettering would have limited value

I have an Al Rosen Fielders glove Model SG374 Pro Maker Licensed under Patent 2,231,204. No indication as to manufacturer or retailer. I'm guessing it was manufactured by Denkert for private label-possibly Coast to Coast. Looks to be 1950's era. Do you have any information concerning this glove?

I am looking at a Vintage Red Schoendienst Denkert Model G84. I am wondering if it was made in the USA, what year was in produced, and what would it be worth. Thanks in advance!
ANTIQUEHAVEN said…
The Red Schoendienst G84 is fairly common and is valued at around $20-40 in good condition
I just bought a Denkert Joe Medwick FG50. It says Knuckle-eze Model, Greased Palm, & Cowhide in the palm. It is a split-fingered, buckle-back fielders glove. One of the things I like best about the glove is that Joe Medwick is in big block letters with the Joe Medwick facsimile signature underneath it, located on the bottom part of the pinky finger. It is a very cool glove. I think it is probably from the early forties because Medwick started playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1940. Any idea what year or decade it would be from and how much it might be worth? Thanks!
One more question about the Medwick glove above. Is it a single tunnel or a double tunnel? It only came with one. Thanks again!
