New Jersey Central RR - Sandy Hook Route - Dinner Plate

Driving through Pennsylvania this month on vacation, I picked up this nice plate from a small town Antique Mall. It is a 10.5" souvenir service plate from The New Jersey Central Railroad. The center of the plate depicts New York Harbor. Around the inside perimeter it depicts all the steamships in approximate order of decommission from the NJC.

Kill Von Kull, Long Branch, Jesse Hoyt, Empire State, St. Johns, Ashbury Park, Monmouth and Sandy Hook.

The outer perimeter lists the various stops that existed along the route: Atlantic Highlands, Keansburg, Keyport, Sea Bright, Long Branch, Elberon, Allenhurst, Ashbury Park, Belmar, Spring Lake and Point Pleasant.

The "Sandy Hook Route" as it became to be known, began in 1892 and was a trip between 2 points in New York across New York Harbor to the Atlantic Highlands, a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey. The last run was in 1941.

The plate was made by Scammell China Company out of Trenton, NJ (1924-1954), a known maker of Restaurant China. Apparently, this plate was a souvenir that was offered for sale on NJC's Ferries in the 1940's or early 1950's. There was a heavier version of this plate that was used earlier on the NJC steamships. Both are considered rare. I will be listing this plate for sale on E-bay.

SOLD $250
